If you are someone with a love of classic architecture, then you might find modern city life to be somewhat frustrating. The cut-and-paste feeling of many buildings today can take away from the beauty of architecture. If you would like to find something a bit more meaningful and inventive, though, you might wish to come to Germany. While Germany is home to many amazing modern cities, it is the quaint little medieval towns and cities that are here which are worth visiting.
What, though, are some of the best German medieval towns to come and check out?
Goslar
The first place we recommend you start off with is the beautiful town of Goslar. This is in the Harz Mountains, and as such has the perfect landscape surrounding it for such a town. You will see some very classic, old-school buildings as you make your way through this city.
It is home to old-school murals as well as classic architecture; including a breath-taking 13th Century church that still retains much of its original grandeur and charm. You might also wish to visit the Imperial Palace; another example of grandiose opulence from olden times.
Rothenburg Ob Der Tauber
If you find yourself in the plush state of Bavaria, then you might want to take time away from major cities like Munich to come here. Rothenburg ob der Tauber is a stunning medieval town; in fact, it looks in such good condition you could be forgiven for thinking it was a modern build in keeping with classic tradition.
The town, though, was formed as far back as 1170 and has become one of the most iconic towns to come visit anywhere in Germany. Check out the museums in-town, too, to understand the reality of life for people in this town in years gone past.
Heidelberg
You should absolutely look to make the space on your itinerary for a trip to Heidelberg, too. This amazing little town is not only home to amazing architecture, but also to the home of the oldest university in the country. The castle which overlooks the town was built in the 1200s and then rebuilt during the Renaissance era.
It is a beautiful architectural marvel, and is also likely to be a fine place to come check out if you are looking for something a little more grandiose and opulent than other medieval towns.
Bamberg
Another great medieval town in Germany to come visit would be Bamberg. This tremendous city manages to be the ‘Venice of Germany’ in more ways than one. Spread out across a variety of hills that sit atop the Regnitz River, this really is like something from a fairytale adventure.
It is also home to one of the finest breweries in Germany, the Schlenkerla Brewery. Operating since the 15th Century, it is a fine example of the kind of unique beers that you can find outside of the big cities across the country. A fantastic, fairytale experience that has many taverns and bars to enjoy that old-school medieval experience within.
